How to Crochet the Woodland Wildflower Square

Designned by Elizabeth Martin. This pattern began back when my little boy was 3, we went to the village woods for a spring walk. He stumble upon spring wildflowers in the family of daisies and dandelions, and buttercups and celandnes. He said "Yeyo!" (for yellow). I wanted to call this a yeyo square, but ended up with a long woodland wildflower square.

Let’s get started

Stitch Challenge

These are the basic crochet skills needed to be able to crochet the pattern.

  • sl st – slip stitch
  • ch – chain
  • sc – single crochet
  • tr – treble crochet
  • dc – double crochet

Stitch Standards

I am using the US/International Standard Crochet Terms

Foundation Chains

To begin, make a slipknot. Make it loose. Chain 5. Make a slip stitch into the loose slipknot, then pull the yarn end tight.

Round 1 (W)

Chain 1.
* Work 1 single crochet into the ring, then work 1 treble crochet.
Repeat * 7 more times. This will be tight for a chain 5 ring, try squeezing the 16 stitches. Then make a slip stitch into the first single crochet at the beginning of the round.

Round 2 (R)

Chain 1. Turn. Work 1 single crochet into the same stitch.

* Chain 3. Work 1 single crochet into the next single crochet which is right between the next 2 petals.

Repeat * until the 7th petal only. Chain 1. Work a double crochet into the first single crochet at the beginning of the round.

Round 3 (W)

Chain 2. Turn. Work 1 treble and 1 double crochet together into the same corner space.

* Side Space: Chain 3. Work 1 single crochet into the next chain 3 space. Chain 3, and work another single crochet into the same chain 3 space. Chain 3.

** Corner Space: Work [1 double, 1 treble, 1 double] crochet together (cluster stitch) into the next chain 3 space. Chain 3. Work another cluster stitch into the same chain 3 space.

Repeat *, ** all the way across until the last side space. To finish the other half of the corner space work 3 double crochet into the next space (the first corner). Chain 1 and work a double crochet into the top of the first cluster stitch made at the beginning of the round.

Round 4 (R)

Chain 1. Work 1 single crochet into the same corner space.

* Side Space: Chain 3. Work 1 single crochet into the next chain 3 space. Then 1 single crochet into the next chain 3 space. Chain 3, and work another single crochet into the same chain 3 space. Then 1 single crochet into the next chain 3 space. Chain 3.

** Corner Space: Work 1 single crochet, chain 3, and another single crochet into the next corner space.

Repeat *, ** all the way across until the last side space. To finish the other half of the corner space work 1 single crochet into the next corner space (the first corner).

If you are not changing color, chain 1 and work a double crochet into the top of the first single crochet made at the beginning of the round.

If you are changing color for Round 5, chain 3 and make a slip stitch into the top of the first single crochet made at the beginning of the round. Cut the yarn, and tidy up your ends.

You can stop at Round 4, start making more squares and connect them from this stop. But then, you can continue with Round 5 if you wish to connect them as a granny square.

Round 5 (R)

Option 1: If continuing using the same yarn, chain 6 (this counts as 1 double crochet and chain 3), and work 3 double crochet into the same corner space.

Option 2: If you are changing color, make a slipknot using the new yarn color, yarn over, insert your hook into one of the corner, yarn over and pull up a loop. There’s should be 3 loops on your hook. Then proceed with a double crochet. Chain 3, and work 3 double crochet into the same corner space.

* Side Space: Work a V-stitch of [1 double, chain 1, 1 double] crochet into the next chain 3 space 3 times.

** Corner Space: Work [3 double, chain 3, 3 double] crochet into the next corner space.

Repeat *, ** all the way across until the last side space. To finish the other half of the corner space work 2 double crochet into the next corner space (the first corner). For Option 1, slip stitch into both loops of the 3rd chain at the beginning of the round. For Option 2, make a slip stitch into the first double crochet made at the beginning of the round.

Cut the yarn, and tidy up your ends.
